Towards obtaining the final fate of the black string
Speaker(s): Luis Lehner
Abstract: In 1993 Gregory and Laflamme conjectured (based on linearized analysis and entropy considerations) that a black string could bifurcate and, among other consequences, could be an example of violations of cosmic censorship. Additionally, the bifurcation possibility was embraced in different investigations in string theory like discussions of density of states from the AdS/CFT correspondence, unstable D-brane configurations, etc. Two recent works have questioned this result (although the outcome predicted by these are completely different). I will describe an effort towards understanding the system via numerical simulations, which is capable of studying the problem without the restrictions of the previous studies. Preliminary results will be presented.
