Topological Phases of Matter and Patterns of Quantum Entanglements

Abstract: Different quantum phases are actually different patterns of quantum entanglements. The topological ordered phases correspond to long range entangled phases. It turns out that topological insulators are examples of short range entangled phases protected by symmetry. This realization allows us to classify topological insulators and more general symmetry protected topological phases in terms of group cohomology, even for interacting systems.
