C06011 - Natural Ultraviolet Cutoffs In Expanding Space-Times The question of how to describe a natural ultraviolet cutoff in an expanding space-time is of significance in several respects. First, it concerns the fate of general covariance in the presence of a natural UV cutoff. Second, it concerns the continued generating of degrees of freedom through expansion, which carries with it the possibility of an associated generating of vacuum energy. Finally, through inflation, a natural ultraviolet cutoff may have left observable imprints in the CMB. http://pirsa.org/podcast/C06011 Science 2009 http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss en-ca Thu, 08 Jan 2009 11:56:42 -0500 sbradwell@perimeterinstitute.ca Thu, 08 Jan 2009 11:56:42 -0500 G 180 pirsa-admin@perimeterinstitute.ca Steve Bradwell's - Podcast Generator Mode creation in expanding universes, through dissipative effects Renaud Parentani http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/aa96dc63-94da-4657-b029-e0908a2aa92f.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/aa96dc63-94da-4657-b029-e0908a2aa92f.mp3 Tue, 05 Sep 2006 09:00:00 -0400 QFT on a growing lattice Brendan Foster http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/7ba8086f-e375-4257-a6d3-ebcc1384d146.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/7ba8086f-e375-4257-a6d3-ebcc1384d146.mp3 Tue, 05 Sep 2006 11:00:00 -0400 A discrete, Lorentz-invariant wave equation and its continuum limit Rafael Sorkin http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/843aa7df-8224-4b38-8768-2098bf85d211.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/843aa7df-8224-4b38-8768-2098bf85d211.mp3 Tue, 05 Sep 2006 14:00:00 -0400 Insights from background independent approaches to quantum gravity Lee Smolin http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/a0d1c6b0-a4cb-4612-8a27-fde33d4d254d.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/a0d1c6b0-a4cb-4612-8a27-fde33d4d254d.mp3 Tue, 05 Sep 2006 16:00:00 -0400 Black hole evaporation and information Lee Smolin http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/15512a84-c893-4965-a59c-1f8909efa8d9.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/15512a84-c893-4965-a59c-1f8909efa8d9.mp3 Tue, 05 Sep 2006 18:00:00 -0400 Questions about high - k phsyics in expanding spacetimes Jens Niemeyer http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/3c6b3e60-56b8-4ad5-983b-c0872d703e53.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/3c6b3e60-56b8-4ad5-983b-c0872d703e53.mp3 Wed, 06 Sep 2006 09:00:00 -0400 Inflationary cosmological pertubations of quantum - mechanical origin Jerome Martin http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/989016d2-d0f7-435f-a4f8-ed118e400740.mp3 Science http://streamer.perimeterinstitute.ca/mp3/989016d2-d0f7-435f-a4f8-ed118e400740.mp3 Wed, 06 Sep 2006 11:00:00 -0400 Thermodynamics of spacetime I will first argue that the notion of black hole entropy extends universally to causal horizons. Then I will deduce the causal dynamics of spacetime from the equilibrium thermodynamics of causal horizons. Specifically, it will be shown how the Clausius relation dS = dQ/T between entropy change, energy flux, and acceleration temperature for all local causal horizons implies the Einstein equation, with Newton's constant determined by the universal horizon entropy density. Implications, non-equilibrium processes, and relations to AdS/CFT duality will also be discussed.
