Aspects that will be covered are: closed and open strings, Gromov-Witten theory, matrix models, quantum crystals, and special holonomy manifolds. I will end with some more speculative thoughts about the non-perturbative definition of (topological) string theory and quantum geometry. The LLM geometries are parameterized by a single function u on a plane. We treat this function as a collective coordinate. We arrive at the collective coordinate action as well as path integral measure by considering D3 branes in an arbitrary LLM geometry. The resulting functional integral is shown, using known methods (hep-th/9309028), to be the classical limit of a functional integral for free fermions in a harmonic oscillator. The function u gets identified with the classical limit of the Wigner phase space distribution of the fermion theory which satisfies u * u = u. The calculation shows how configuration space of supergravity becomes a phase space (hence noncommutative) in the half-BPS sector. Our method sheds some new light on counting supersymmetric configurations in supergravity. We discuss this perturbation theory with a special emphasis on a hidden symmetry. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) has measured the angular power spectrum of the CMB temperature and temperature-polarization power spectra with unprecedented accuracy from its first year in flight. These recent observations along with developments in supernovae and galaxy surveys are generating critical challenges for theoretical physics, producing fundamental, intriguing questions in particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics that are as yet unresolved. We discuss in this seminar how the theoretical picture of the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the origins of the universe, is being guided and modified by observations. I will review some aspects of Sasaki-Einstein geometry and the main features of the Y^{p,q} metrics. I will then discuss the use of toric geometry to obtain a description of the corresponding Y^{p,q} Calabi-Yau singularities. I will explain how the AdS/CFT dual N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories were constructed using the combined information obtained from the metrics and the toric singularities. A crucial check on the consistency of the construction is provided by the field theory technique of a-maximisation. In the last part of the talk I will briefly discuss the recently formulated geometric dual of this, i.e. "Z-minimisation". These spin chains have fundamental ``magnon'' excitations which obey a dispersion relation that is periodic in the momentum of the magnons. This result for the dispersion relation was also shown to hold at arbitrary 't Hooft coupling. Here we identify these magnons on the string theory side and we show how to reconcile a periodic dispersion relation with the continuum worldsheet description. The crucial idea is that the momentum is interpreted in the string theory side as a certain geometrical angle. We use these results to compute the energy of a spinning string. We also show that the symmetries that determine the dispersion relation and that constrain the S-matrix are the same in the gauge theory and the string theory. We compute the overall S-matrix at large 't Hooft coupling using the string description and we find that it agrees with an earlier conjecture. We also find an infinite number of two magnon bound states at strong coupling, while at weak coupling this number is finite. Recently, the realization that both sides of the duality, in certain limits, can be be described by integrable systems has lead to a good deal of progress. In this talk we will review the construction of these integrable structures and their usefulness in understanding strings in curved backgrounds/strongly coupled gauge theories. We will discuss how the asymptotic S-matrix that enters the Bethe equations for gauge theory anomalous dimensions provides a very convenient description of the system and how it can be reproduced from the classical string theory. Further, we will outline some partial attempts to extend this equivalence, and the corresponding integrable structures, to include world-sheet quantum loop effects. Both theories at the tree level are the Green-Schwarz superstring theory in the light-cone gauge. At the interaction level, the twist fields and the spin fields in MST correspond to the string interaction vertices in LCSFT. Since the CFT fields in MST are characterized by their OPEs, we would like to realize the OPEs by the interaction vertices in LCSFT to see the correspondence. In this talk I will begin with reviews of both theories and proceed to the correspondence between them. After reviewing recent developments in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence between the IR gauge theory living on a stack of D3-branes placed at a Calabi-Yau singularity and type IIB string theory on the near horizon geometry, we focus on the problem of counting chiral BPS operators in this class of CFTs and we match them with the dual string states in the general case of toric CY. Partition functions can be explicitly written in all sectors with fixed baryonic charge using localization over fixed points of the toric actions. These partition functions are related to the volume functions of the Sasaki-Einstein manifold and of its divisors. These can induce superpotential couplings among the open string fields which are forbidden at the perturbative level since they violate some of the global U(1) symmetries generically present in string theory. Phenomenologcially important couplings of this type include Majorana mass terms for right-handed neutrinos or mu-terms in the Higss sector of the MSSM. If realized in concrete constructions, the exponential suppression of such non-perturbative terms may 'naturally' generate the observed hierarchies characteristic of these couplings. After discussing the general philosophy, we derive the prescription for the CFT computation of such non-perturbative superpotential couplings and exemplify the computation of Majorana mass terms in toroidal intersecting brane worlds. If time permits, we also comment on D2-instanton effetcs potentially destabilising the vacuum or modifying the D-term supersymmetry conditions. I present a study of this connection in the context of matrix models in 1/N-expansion and topological strings. I will show how to compute the one-instanton corrections for a generic matrix model. Due to a recent matrix model inspired formalism for the topological string amplitudes on local Calabi-Yau manifolds, this can be used to compute nonperturbative effects in topological string theory and make predictions about the asymptotics of the string perturbation series. I discuss various cases where our predictions can be tested, yielding spectacular agreement with the asymptotics extracted by standard numerical methods. We allow for a weak impurity scattering rate, a magnetic field $B$, and a deviation in the density, $rho$, from that of the insulator. We show that the frequency-dependent thermal and electric linear response functions, including the Nernst coefficient, are fully determined by a single transport coefficient (a universal electrical conductivity), the impurity scattering rate, and a few thermodynamic state variables. With reasonable estimates for the parameters, our results predict a magnetic field and temperature dependence of the Nernst signal which resembles measurements in the cuprates, including the overall magnitude. Our theory predicts a ``hydrodynamic cyclotron mode'' which could be observable in ultrapure samples. We also present exact results for the zero frequency transport co-efficients of a supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT), which is solvable by the AdS/CFT correspondence. This correspondence maps the $rho$ and $B$ perturbations of the 2+1 dimensional CFT to electric and magnetic charges of a black hole in the 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space. These exact results are found to be in full agreement with the general predictions of our hydrodynamic analysis in the appropriate limiting regime. The mapping of the hydrodynamic and AdS/CFT results under particle-vortex duality is also described. However, this can be cured by defining a large N double scaling limit where one approaches the singularity by keeping the mass M of these states fixed. This limit has several interesting features. For example, the conventional \'t Hooft limit leads to a free theory of colour singlet states where all interactions are suppressed by powers of 1/N. In this case, the large N Hilbert space splits into two decoupled sectors, and one of them keeps residual interactions whose strength in inversely proportional to the mass M. We argue that for a class of these models the dynamics of this sector is dual to a non-critical superstring background, which is exactly solvable. The setting of this investigation is an off-shell formulation of five-dimensional supergravity, including terms of order four-derivatives whose precise form are determined by embedding this theory in M-theory. We find that certain singular solutions are fully regularized by the higher-derivative terms and that generic solutions receive calculable corrections to the entropy, or other relevant quantities such as the dual central charge. A particular solution studied corresponds to the geometry sourced by a fundamental string and may set the stage for a new and exciting example of holography. In an orientifold background, D-brane charge takes values in a certain twisted version of KR Theory. Moreover, there is a nontrivial background charge ('tadpole'). Up 'til now, this background charge has only been calculated rationally -- i.e., ignoring torsion. We derive a formula for it, over the integers. Only after 'inverting 2', does the charge localize to the fixed point sets of the orientifold action, and we can give a compact formula for it. This reproduces the previously known rational results, but contains new information. In condensed matter systems, interacting quantum field theories can arise either at a critical point, or in a finite region of a parameter space. In the former case, massless modes arise as a result of fine tuning of external parameters, while, in the latter case, massless modes are protected by topology and/or symmetry. In this talk, I will discuss two examples in 2+1 dimensions (one for each case) where one can understand strong coupling physics nonperturbatively. In the first example, a lattice model which describes a superconducting phase transition will be discussed. In this model, a superconformal symmetry dynamically emerges at the quantum critical point and one can predict non-trivial critical exponents using the enlarged symmetry, even though there is no underlying supersymmetry in the microscopic model. In the second example, I will discuss about a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the AdS4 background with a charged black hole. The spectral function of a fermion field exhibits an interesting non-Fermi liquid behavior, that is, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a critical Fermi ball in the momentum space. Such a setup may eventually be used as a model of the strongly coupled plasma created in heavy ion collisions. I examine examples of both the shear and sound modes. The shear mode is analyzed using the black hole membrane paradigm; a calculation of the shear viscosity is reviewed, and then the calculation is extended to the next hydrodynamical order. All results agree with those found using the AdS/CFT prescription. The sound mode is analyzed by examining the quasi-normal modes of the dual black hole. The relevant gauge invariant equations are derived, and a special case solution of these equations is discussed.
