Quantum Matter

Self-learning Monte Carlo (SLMC) method is a general-purpose numerical method to simulate many-body systems. SLMC can efficiently cure the critical slowing down in both bosonic and fermionic systems. Moreover, for fermionic systems, SLMC can generally reduce the computational complexity and speed up simulations even away from the critical points. For example, SLMC is more than 1000 times faster than the conventional method for the double exchange model in 8*8*8 cubic lattice. In addition, SLMC also provides a general framework to naturally integrate the advanced machine learning techniques into Monte Carlo. In this talk, I will give an introduction about the background, basic idea and the design principle of SLMC. Later, I will explicitly show how to use SLMC and its great accelerations in classic systems, free fermions coupled with classical spins systems, and interacting fermion systems. At the end, I will talk our recent developed a new type of neural network, which is motivated by the mean field theory and could be used to represent many physical Hamiltonians. We believe the new structural network would be highly efficient to identify different phases and accelerate the numerical simulations for even complex models.

The appearance of scale invariance and diverging response functions in many-body systems is inseparably linked to the presence of a critical point and spontaneous symmetry breaking. In thermal equilibrium critical points mostly correspond to isolated spots in parameter space, which require rather strong fine tuning of e.g., the temperature of magnetic fields, in order to be reached. Pushing systems away from thermal equilibrium, e.g., by exposing them to external drive fields or dissipation, can give rise to more unconventional forms of criticality. External driving and dissipation may even turn critical points robust and attractive, imposing scale invariance for a large variety of external parameters, a phenomenon known as self-organized criticality (SOC).

I will discuss the manifestation of SOC in driven dissipative cold atom ensembles, for which a direct mapping of their microscopic parameters to an SOC field theory exists. This yields an opportunity to study SOC, typically associated with hard-to-control, large scale non-equilibrium setups, such as earthquakes, solar flares, or neural networks, under very controlled conditions. In addition, I will briefly explain the theoretical challenges for a quantum theory of self-organized criticality and point out current steps towards their realization.

Fracton order is a new kind of phase of matter which is similar to topological order, except its excitations have mobility constraints. The excitations are bound to various n-dimensional surfaces with exotic fusion rules that determine how excitations on intersecting surfaces can combine.

This talk will focus on one of the simplest fracton models: the X-cube model. I will explain how this fracton model can be thought of as starting from a 3D toric code and stacks of 2D toric code layers, and then condensing certain excitations on the 2D layers. This is the first TQFT picture of the X-cube model as a 3D order with non-invertible 2D "defects". When we zoom out so that the layers appear close together, I'll show that the model can be described by what I call a foliated field theory. I define a foliated field theory to be a field theory that couples to a foliation field, which describes the geometry of the foliating layers (in analogy to a metic which describes the geometry of spacetime). In this case, the foliated field theory takes the form of a 3+1D BF theory which is coupled to stacks of 2+1 BF theories, with stacking structure described by the foliation field.

Using Monte Carlo methods we explore how well does the recent proposal for computing conformal dimensions, using a large charge expansion, work. We focus on the O(2) and the O(4) Wilson-Fisher fixed points as test cases. Since the traditional Monte Carlo approach suffers from a severe signal-to-noise ratio problem in the large charge sectors, we use worldline formulations that eliminate such problems. In particular we argue that the O(4) model can be simplified drastically by studying what we refer to as a "qubit" formulation. Such simpler  formulations of quantum field theories have become interesting recently from the perspective of quantum computing. Using our studies we confirm that the conformal dimensions of both conformal field theories with O(2) and O(4) symmetries obey a simple formula predicted by the large charge expansion. We also compute the two leading universal low energy constants in both cases , that play an important role in the large charge expansion.

We discover an infinite hierarchical web of the products of supersymmetric generators sustained by the superconformal Virasoro algebra. This hierarchy structure forms the mathematical foundation underpinning the explicit derivation of the character for the self-symmetric Ramond highest weight $c/24$. To consistently fit these exact results into the modular-invariant torus partition function, we advocate a necessary augmentation of the representation theory in the original Friedan--Qiu--Shenker construction via symmetrizing the ground-state manifold associated with the $c/24$ Verma module. Under the newly-proposed scheme, we invoke a quantum-interference mechanism between the two independent Ishibashi states to construct the boundary Cardy states for the whole family of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal minimal series, based on which the extra fusion channels are unveiled through the obtained Verlinde formula. Our work thus provides the first complete solution to this thirty-year-old question.

Recently, a new family of correlated honeycomb materials with strong spin-orbit coupling have been promising candidates to realize the Kitaev spin liquid. In particular, a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity was reported in alpha-RuCl3 under the magnetic field. Using a generic nearest neighbour spin model with bond-dependent interactions, I will present numerical evidence of an extended regime of quantum spin liquids. I will also discuss how to achieve a chiral spin liquid near ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction in the presence of the magnetic field leading to the quantized thermal Hall conductivity.

Kitaev materials — spin-orbit assisted Mott insulators, in which local, spin-orbit entangled j=1/2 moments form that are subject to strong bond-directional interactions — have attracted broad interest for their potential to realize spin liquids. Experimentally, a number of 4d and 5d systems have been widely studied including the honeycomb materials Na2IrO3, α-Li2IrO3, and RuCl3 as candidate spin liquid compounds — however, all of these materials magnetically order at sufficiently low temperatures. In this talk, I will discuss the physics of Kitaev materials that plays out when applying magnetic fields. Experiments on RuCl3 indicate the formation of a chiral spin liquid that gives rise to an observed quantized thermal Hall effect. Conceptually, this asks for a deeper understanding of the physics of the Kitaev model in tilted magnetic fields. I will report on our recent numerical studies that give strong evidence for a Higgs transition from the well known Z2 topological spin liquid to a gapless U(1) spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface and put this into perspective of experimental studies.

We study the eigenstate properties of a nonintegrable spin chain that was recently realized experimentally in a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator. In the experiment, long-lived coherent many-body oscillations were observed only when the system was initialized in a particular product state. This pronounced coherence has been attributed to the presence of special "scarred" eigenstates with nearly equally-spaced energies and putative nonergodic properties despite their finite energy density. In this paper we uncover a surprising connection between these scarred eigenstates and low-lying quasiparticle excitations of the spin chain. In particular, we show that these eigenstates can be accurately captured by a set of variational states containing a macroscopic number of magnons with momentum π. This leads to an interpretation of the scarred eigenstates as finite-energy-density condensates of weakly interacting π-magnons. One natural consequence of this interpretation is that the scarred eigenstates possess long-range order in both space and time, providing a rare example of the spontaneous breaking of continuous time-translation symmetry. We verify numerically the presence of this space-time crystalline order and explain how it is consistent with established no-go theorems precluding its existence in ground states and at thermal equilibrium.

We study the possibility of a deconfined quantum phase transition in a realistic model of a two dimensional Shastry-Sutherland quantum magnet, using both numerical and field theoretic techniques. We argue that the quantum phase transition between a two fold degenerate plaquette valence bond  solid (pVBS) order and N\'eel ordered phase may be described by a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) with emergent O(4) symmetry. Further, using the infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) numerical technique, we verify the emergence of an intermediate pVBS order, between the dimer and Neel ordered phases. By analyzing the correlation length spectrum, we provide evidence for deconfinement and emergent O(4) symmetry at the phases transistion between the pVBS and N\'eel orders. Such a phase transition has been reported in the recent pressure tuned experiments in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material  SrCu2(BO3)2. The non-symmorphic lattice structure of the Shastry-Sutherland compound leads to extinction points in the scattering, where we predict sharp signatures of a DQCP in both the phonon and magnon spectra associated with the spinon continuua. Our results can guide future experimental studies of DQCP in quantum magnets.

The construction of soluble lattice toy models is an important theoretical approach in the study of strongly interacting topological phases of matter. On the other hand, the primary experimental probe to such systems is via electromagnetic response. Somewhat unsatisfactorily, the current systematic construction of the lattice toy models focuses on braiding statistics and does not admit coupling to an electromagnetic background. Thus there is a mismatch between our theoretical approach and experimental probe. In this talk I introduce how to systematically incorporate electromagnetic response into the soluble lattice toy models, for a large class of abelian topological phases. [Reference: 1902.06756] 

Experiments with ultracold fermionic gases are thriving and continue to provide us with valuable insights into fundamental aspects of physics. A special system of interest is the so-called unitary Fermi gas (UFG) situated right in the "middle" of the crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluidity and Bose-Einstein condensation. However, the theoretical treatment of these gases is highly challenging due to the absence of a small expansion parameter as well as the appearance of the infamous sign problem in the presence of, e.g., finite spin polarizations. In this talk, I will discuss the concept of stochastic quantization and motivate the complex Langevin (CL) method for non-relativistic fermions as an alternative to conventional Monte Carlo approaches. In particular, I will show how the CL approach can be employed to study the spin-polarized UFG. In the unpolarized limit, our results for the EOS are in excellent agreement with the existing state-of-the-art results from other ab-initio approaches as well as with experimental data. For the polarized case, our results for the EOS and other thermodynamic quantities represent experimentally testable predictions, already providing us with some insight into the underlying phase diagram.

In crystals, quantum electrons can be spatially distributed in a way that the bulk solid supports macroscopic electric multipole moments, which are deeply 

related with emergence of topology insulators in condensed matter systems. However, unlike the classical electric multipoles in open space, 

defining electric multipoles in crystals is a non-trivial task. So far, only the dipolar moment, namely polarization, has been successfully defined and served as a classic example of topological insulators. 

In this talk, we propose the general definition, i.e., many-body invariants, for electric multipoles in crystals, which are related with recently-discovererd higher-order topological insulators. 

Our invariants are designed to measure the distribution of electron charge in unit cells and thus can detect multipole moments purely from the bulk ground state wavefunctions. 

We provide analytic as well as numerical proofs for our invariants. Application of our invariants to spin systems as well as various other aspects of the many-body invariants will be briefly discussed.
