Karol obtained his Ph.D. at the Jagiellonian University in 1988. He worked as a Humboldt Fellow at University of Essen in 1989/90 and as a Senior Fulbright Fellow at University of Maryland in College Park in 1997/98. He obtained his habilitation degree in 1994 and earned the professor title (a state title in Poland) in 2004.
