An important and unresolved question in cosmology today is whether there is new physics that is missing from our current standard Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model. A current discrepancy in the measurement of the Hubble constant could be signaling a new physical property of the universe or, more mundanely, unrecognized measurement uncertainties. I will discuss two of our most precise methods for measuring distances in the local universe: Cepheids and the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). I will present new results from the Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program (CCHP), the goal of which is to independently measure a value of the Hubble constant to a precision and accuracy of 2%. Using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys,  we are  using the TRGB to calibrate Type Ia supernovae. I will  address the uncertainties,  discuss the current tension in Ho, and whether there is need for additional physics beyond the standard LCDM model.

The problem of quantum gravity -- i.e. to determine the microscopic structure underlying quantum mechanical theories that reproduce general relativity at long distances -- is a major outstanding problem in modern physics.  Solving the quantum gravitational scattering problem is one sharp way to address this question.  While in principle effective field theory (EFT) provides a systematic framework for solving scattering problems, in quantum gravity the complete answer requires an infinite number of measurements and thereby fails to predict details of the microscopic structure.

I will present two developments that provide new insight into the gravitational scattering problem.   The first is a class of infinite-dimensional symmetries generically found to arise in gauge and gravitational scattering.  The infinite number of constraints implied by the symmetries are equivalent to quantum field theoretic soft theorems, which prescribe the pattern of soft radiation produced during a scattering event.  The second development is a reformulation of the gravitational scattering problem in which Lorentz symmetry is rendered manifest and realized as the action of the global conformal group in two dimensions.  This reformulation, which involves scattering particles of definite boost weight as opposed to energy, offers a new approach precisely because it does not admit the decoupling of low and high-energy physics that underpins the traditional EFT approach.  I will describe new perspectives ensuing from these developments on various properties of the gravitational scattering problem, including collinear limits, infrared divergences and universal behavior associated to black hole formation.

The Celestial Holography framework applies the holographic principle to spacetimes with vanishing cosmological constant by mapping 4D S-matrix elements to correlators in a 2D conformal field theory. This map possesses a number of surprising features. For example, it emphasizes infinite dimensional symmetry enhancements, which are typically hidden in IR factorization theorems for amplitudes; reorganizes collinear limits as CFT operator product expansions; and mixes UV and IR behavior in a manner that may allow us to make general claims about scattering not obvious from perturbation theory.

Can we show that the UV behavior of amplitudes must be stringy? Can we bootstrap celestial CFTs? Can we unify tools from Loop Quantum Gravity and String Theory?

No. Obviously not. It's a daft question. But, buried underneath
this daft question is an extremely interesting one: is it possible to
simulate the known laws of physics on a computer? Remarkably, there is a
mathematical theorem, due to Nielsen and Ninomiya, that says the answer is
no. I'll explain this theorem, the underlying reasons for it, and some
recent work attempting to circumvent it.

In this talk, I will review the recent advances in the understanding of intriguing infinite-dimensional symmetries that emerge at the boundary of asymptotically flat spacetime and in the vicinity of black hole horizons. These symmetries play an important role in the description of many phenomena such as gravitational memory effects and scattering amplitudes, and have paved the way to a holographic description of gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes in terms of correlators on the celestial sphere.

Many of previous approaches for the firewall puzzle rely on a hypothesis that interior partner modes are embedded on the early radiation of a maximally entangled black hole. Quantum information theory, however, casts doubt on this folklore and suggests a different tale; the outgoing Hawking mode will be decoupled from the early radiation once an infalling observer, with finite positive energy, jumps into a black hole. In this talk, I will provide counterarguments against current mainstream proposals and present an alternative resolution of the firewall puzzle which is consistent with predictions from quantum information theory. My proposal builds on the fact that interior operators can be constructed in a state-independent manner once an infalling observer is explicitly included as a part of the quantum system. Hence, my approach resolves a version of the firewall puzzle for typical black hole microstates as well on an equal footing.
 

A planar map is a canonical model for a discrete surface which is studied in probability theory, combinatorics, theoretical physics, and geometry. Liouville quantum gravity provides a natural model for a continuum random surface with roots in string theory and conformal field theory. After introducing these objects, I will present a joint work with Xin Sun where we prove convergence of random planar maps to a Liouville quantum gravity surface under a discrete conformal embedding which we call the Cardy embedding.

In this talk I will introduce the Fully Constrained Formulation (FCF) of General Relativity. In this formulation one has a hyperbolic sector and an elliptic one. The constraint equations are solved in each time step and are encoded in the elliptic sector; this set of equations have to be solved to compute initial data even if a free evolution scheme is used for a posterior dynamical evolution. Other formulations (like the XCTS formulation) share a similar elliptic sector. I will comment about the local uniqueness issue of the elliptic sector in the FCF. I will also described briefly the hyperbolic sector. I will finish with some recent reformulation of the equations which keeps the good properties of the local uniqueness, improves the numerical accuracy of the system and gives some additional information.

The Event Horizon Telescope is a global effort to construct an
Earth-sized virtual radio telescope array, with the goal to make pictures and
movies of two nearby supermassive black holes. A detailed theoretical
understanding of black hole accretion is now crucial to interpret these
observations. I will review our current efforts to model polarimetric
properties of light produced in synchrotron processes in plasma falling
towards the event horizon. The numerical models are based on general
relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations so they are capable of capturing
the complex dynamics of magnetic fields and their interactions with plasma. It is now
important to understand the polarized radiative transfer in these simulations
to correctly predict the observational signatures of the events at the event
horizon scales where the accretion disk and jet are connected.

In string compactifications the roles of physics and geometry are intrinsically intertwined. While the goals of these 4-dimensional effective theories are physical, the path to those answers frequently leads to cutting-edge challenges in modern mathematics. In this talk, I will describe recent progress in characterizing the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds in terms their description as elliptic fibrations. This description has remarkable consequences for the form of the string vacuum space and the properties of string effective theories, including particle masses and couplings.

A vibrant program has formed in recent years in various scientific disciplines to take advantage of near-term and future quantum-simulation and quantum-computing hardware to study complex quantum many-body systems, building upon the vision of Richard Feynman for quantum simulation. Such activities have recently started in nuclear and particle physics, hoping to bring new and powerful experimental and computational tools to eventually address a range of challenging problems in strongly interacting quantum field theories and nuclear many-body systems. In this talk, I review a number of important developments, including proposals for simulating strongly interacting field theories with the ultimate goal of studying strong dynamics of quarks and gluons, and of nucleons. Some of the requirements for hardware technologies that are expected to enable both the analog simulations and the digital quantum computations of these problems will be enumerated, and an experiment-theory co-development program will be motivated with an emphasis on trapped-ion platforms.

A dark matter candidate lighter than about 30 eV exhibits wave behavior in a typical galactic environment. Examples include the QCD axion as well as other axion-like-particles. We review the particle physics motivations, and discuss experimental and observational implications of the wave dynamics, including interference substructures, vortices, soliton condensation and black hole hair.
