Scientific Series

While the simplest Feynman diagrams evaluate to multiple polylogarithms, more complicated functions can arise, involving integrals over higher-dimensional manifolds. Surprisingly, all examples of such manifolds in the literature to date are Calabi-Yau. I discuss why this is, and prove that a specific class of "marginal" diagrams give rise to Calabi-Yau manifolds. I demonstrate a bound on the dimensionality of these manifolds with loop order, and present infinite families of diagrams that saturate this bound to all orders.

This seminar will focus on two cases where the interplay of topology and interactions allows for phases that go beyond simple quasi-particle descriptions. Both models are amenable to sign free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

First, we design a two-dimensional model consisting of four Dirac-fermion layers on the square lattice. The interaction is given by a four-fermion term where each fermion is from a different layer. In the uncorrelated case, the topology is determined by a Z-valued winding number and previous studies, often using the bulk-boundary correspondence and dimensional reduction arguments, predict the reduction to a Z4 classification in the presence of correlations. An adiabatic path between formerly distinct phases has to visit a strongly interacting state that cannot be described on a mean-field level. We study the phase diagram of the full bulk system and find a symmetry broken state separating topological distinct phases. An attempt to frustrate the ordered state introduces a first order phase transition [Fig. 1 (left)].

Second, we consider Dirac electrons on the honeycomb lattice Kondo coupled to spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on the kagome lattice. The interactions between the spins are chosen along the lines of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin model that is known to host a Z2 spin liquid and a fer- romagnetic phase. While in the ferromagnetic phase the Dirac electrons acquire a gap, they remain massless in the Z2 spin liquid phase due to the breakdown of Kondo screening. Since our model has an odd number of spins per unit cell, this phase is a non-Fermi liquid, also called fractionalized Fermi liquid, that violates the conventional Luttinger theorem, which relates the Fermi volume to the particle density in a Fermi liquid. We probe the Kondo breakdown in this non-Fermi liquid phase via conventional observables such as the spectral function, and also by studying the mutual information between the electrons and the spins [Fig. 1 (right)].

Mirković-Vilonen cycles are certain algebraic cycles in the affine Grassmannian that give rise to a particular weight basis (the MV basis) under the Geometric Satake equivalence. I will state a conjecture about the Weyl group action on weight-zero MV cycles and equivariant multiplicities. I can prove it for small coweights in type A. Equivalently, I show that the MV basis agrees with the Springer basis. I have similar results for the Ginzburg-Nakajima basis. A primary tool is work of Braverman, Gaitsgory and Vybornov.

We present a consistent theory of classical gravity coupled to quantum field theory. The dynamics is linear in the density matrix, completely positive and trace-preserving, and reduces to Einstein's equations in the classical limit. Several no-go theorems are evaded since the assumption that gravity is classical necessarily modifies the dynamical laws of quantum mechanics -- the theory must be fundamentally stochastic involving finite sized and probabilistic jumps in space-time and in the quantum field. Nonetheless the quantum state of the system can remain pure conditioned on the classical degrees of freedom. The measurement postulate of quantum mechanics is not needed since the interaction of the quantum degrees of freedom with classical space-time necessarily causes collapse of the wave-function. More generally, we derive a form of classical-quantum dynamics using a non-commuting divergence which has as its limit deterministic classical Hamiltonian evolution, and which doesn't suffer from the pathologies of the semi-classical theory. The minimal Standard Model running of the gauge couplings gives us a hint of a Grand Unified Theory (GUT) at M_U ~ 10^14 GeV — a scale, however, too high to probe directly via collider searches. Fortunately, since the inflationary Hubble scale H can be as high as  5 x 10^13 GeV ~ M_U, such GUT scale states can be cosmologically produced during inflation and contribute to primordial non-Gaussianity (NG).

In this talk, I will explore the possibility of doing on-shell, mass-spin spectroscopy of GUT-states by studying such NG contributions in an extra-dimensional framework of orbifold GUTs. I will identify an interesting regime where the extra dimension is stabilized close to the onset of a horizon and find that the KK gravitons and KK gauge bosons can mediate observable NG providing a direct probe of orbifold GUTs.

In our previous work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 046401 (2018)), we found a quantum spin liquid phase with spinon Fermi surface in the two dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with four-spin ring exchange on a triangular lattice. In this work we dope the spinon Fermi surface phase by studying the t-J model with four-spin ring exchange. We perform density matrix renormalization group calculations on four-leg cylinders of a triangular lattice and find that the dominant pair correlation function is that of a pair density wave, i.e. it is oscillatory while decaying with distance with a power law. The doping dependence of the period is studied. This is the first example where pair density wave is the dominant pairing in a generic strongly interacting system where the pair density wave cannot be explained as a composite order and no special symmetry is required. The path integral approach to quantum gravity has given us many interesting results in the semiclassical regime. However, the canonical path integral for General Relativity still poses a variety of conceptual and computational challenges. To probe the deep quantum regime, Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) techniques are being used successfully in approaches like Causal Dynamical Triangulations and Causal Set Theory. 

In this talk I will discuss how we can apply PIMC techniques to make the canonical Path Integral amenable to computation using matter-time. I will present results from PIMC simulations of homogeneous & isotropic cosmologies, and discuss the extension of this technique to anisotropic as well as inhomogeneous settings. 

The recent gravitational-wave detections of binary mergers 
have opened a new and exciting window into observing the Universe. 
Persistent sources of gravitational waves must also exist; searches for 
continuous gravitational-wave signals generally look for signals from 
non-axisymmetric neutron stars, but are also suitable for continuous 
gravitational waves from axion annihilations in clouds around black 
holes. I will discuss the expected axion annihilations signal from an 
astrophysical standpoint, starting from the Galactic isolated black hole 
population.

Extended Clifford circuits straddle the boundary between classical and quantum computational power. Whether such circuits are efficiently classically simulable seems to depend delicately on the ingredients of the circuits. While some combinations of ingredients lead to efficiently classically simulable circuits, other combinations, which might just be slightly different, lead to circuits which are likely not. We extend the results of Jozsa and Van den Nest [Quantum Inf. Comput. 14, 633 (2014)] by studying various further extensions of Clifford circuits. First, we consider how the classical simulation complexity changes when we allow for more general measurements. Second, we investigate different notions of what it means to "classically simulate" a quantum circuit. Third, we consider the class of conjugated Clifford circuits, where one conjugates every qubit in a Clifford circuit by the same single-qubit gate. Our results provide more examples where seemingly modest changes to the ingredients of Clifford circuits lead to "large" changes in the classical simulation complexities of the circuits, and also include new examples of extended Clifford circuits that are potential candidates for "quantum supremacy". A century ago, Emmy Noether published an article, "Invariante Variationsprobleme", which contained 2 theorems on symmetries and conservation laws in the Gottingen Nachrichten. How original, how modern, how influential were her results? Did they shed light on the question of energy conservation that had arisen in the general theory of relativity? I shall comment on the curious transmission of her theorems and the later recognition of their wide applicability in very numerous fields of physics.

A single layer graphene hides many body effects in the dense viscous 
fluid of p-pi electrons, Bilayer graphene, with AA and AB registry, on 
the other hand, exposes some of them. A twisted bilayer springs more 
surprises. We discuss recently seen superconductivity in twisted bilayer 
graphene. Resonating valence bond (RVB) physics contained in the dense 
electron fluid in graphene is invoked [1]. RVB fails to produce 
superconductivity in neutral graphene, as carrier are absent at the 
Fermi level. In a twisted bilayer, interlayer tunneling adds equal 
number of electron and hole carriers in Moire superlattice of dominant 
AA registry. These carriers use RVB pairing and develop charge -2e and 
+2e Cooper pair correlations, in spite of Coulomb repulsions. Resulting 
Moire lattice of Cooper pair puddles form a Josephson lattice. Coulomb 
blockade makes it a Bosonic Mott insulator. Gate voltage dopes the Bose 
Mott insulator and interesting consequences follow.
